A National Spotlight on Our Work in Addiction Treatment
We’re thrilled to share that research into CA Bridge’s implementation success is featured in a new open-access article in the Health Affairs special Opioid Crisis Issue. “California emergency department patient navigation and buprenorphine provision: a model for low-barrier treatment access” is a retrospective cohort study of learnings from grants made by CA Bridge to over 250 California emergency departments. It links CA Bridge’s implementation at scale to a significant increase in buprenorphine prescribing across California EDs over the implementation period. The study details never-before-published implementation details that explain CA Bridge’s success expanding access to buprenorphine treatment for opioid use disorder.
This study, conducted by UCLA researchers in partnership with CA Bridge leadership, has significant implications for healthcare policy. It explores the reasons behind higher prescribing rates at public hospitals versus private hospitals and posits that regulatory structures that work to sustain new services in areas of health care such as stroke and trauma are likely to be successful in improving addiction care. Finally, it advances the literature on the critical role of dedicated substance use patient navigation in long-term retention in treatment.
